| description: | Health is a national resource which is distributed unevenly in a society. Both individual health and public health can be improved only if we know the health situation in vulnerable populations and use effective measures for intervention. In the field of public health the knowledge and experience from other countries is not directly trasferrable, as the health situation is influenced by social, economical, clultural and psychological determinants as well as by political deisions, which can either support or undermine for healthy decisions, and either neutralize or facilitate the influence of harmful factors. The research will be carried out in seven main areas: - longitudinal studies of the health of adolescents in international comparison; - health monitoring of a representative sample of the Estonian adult population; - the epidemiology of HIV and sexually transmitted diseases in Estonia; - efficacy of HIV prevention; - evaluation of efficacy of health programmes and interventions; - access and quality of medical care; - socio-economical determinants of health. The overall goal of studies is to initiate systematic investigations in the health of nation and to monitor the health developments. Health monitoring with the help of personalized data from health registers enables to evaluate the influence of health determinants, the efficacy of health care services, and the effectiveness of political decisions and health interventions in Estonia. |
