description: The present research program continues an important part of the NICPB earlier research program Molecular biology. Our aim is to elucidate the mechanisms behind development of skin cancer and other cancer types. We have studied mechanisms of tumor angiogenesis and functions of the PTCH-GLI pathway important for formation of several types of cancer. We are currently investigating the functions of this pathway in major human cancers with a focus on breast cancer. We will continue these studies while employing new methodogies such as proteomics and structural biology. Based on the gained information we are developing new and more specific drug candidates against human cancers and testing them in animal models. For the determination of the adverse effects of drug candidates and other xenobiotics a battery of in vitro test systems for the screening of general toxicity, specific toxicity, genotoxicity and endocrine disrupting activity will be developed. One aim of the program is development of clinically relevant cancer models. Better understanding of the molecular mechanisms steering the development of human tumors will enable us to work out new generation drug candidates that are more specific and have fewer side effects. The present research program will help to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms of growth control of human cells enabling us to develop new biotechnological applications to help improve human health and quality of life.
