The goal of the project is the improvement and specification of the data of Finnic phonetics, phonology and morphophonology including that of the Estonian dialects, and providing an analysis of the formation of the phonetics and phonological systems and morphophonological rules of the Estonian language and other Finnic languages. The problems under study include (1) vowel systems of Finnic dialects and their formation, (2) consonant systems of Finnic dialects and their formation, (3) prosodic systems, parameters, and domains of prosodic units (stress, tones, etc.) in Finnic dialects and their formation, (4) phonetic alternations, including gradation, alternation of stem final and suffixal phonemes, and their formation. The research will be largely based on the hitherto inexhausted collections of language data from Estonian, Livonian, Votic, Ingrian, and Veps dialects. Articles in leading international journals of the field, a monograph on prosodic systems of lesser used Finnic languages and data bodies in view of an electronic corpus of Estonian dialects and the phonetic data base of lesser used Finnic languages will be expected results of the research. |
