description: Proposed project has the following main aims: to study the molecular phylogeny of selected groups of fungal taxa (incl. lichens) in combination with phylogenetic analyses of morphological and chemical characters; to identify of distribution patterns of lichenized fungi in boreal forests and ecological factors influencing their distribution; to develop world-wide web based databank for the molecular identification of fungal taxa, the database will include sequences of the rDNA ITS regions and a test version of it is accessible via hermes.zbi.ee/UNITE; to study taxonomy and autecology of plant root mycobionts (Thelephorales) and energy crop pathogens (Melampsora) important for the forestry and agriculture; to compile a world-wide web based taxonomic database needed for the mycological and lichenological biodiversity studies in Estonia.
